Frostburn War

From Wings of Fire: The New World Wiki

The Frostburn War was a role-play event that took place throughout 2022. The event was planned by owner iHeron (then admin iDinoSoul) and admin Phen (then trial admin Phen). The event primarily focused on the conflict between Fire Lore Vulture of the Sky Nation and King Noctua of the Ice Kingdom for the Heart of Ice and Fire, an enchanted relic created by an ancient SkyWing/IceWing hybrid animus known as Frostburn. It culminated in a server-wide multi-day war that ultimately resulted in the destruction of the heart by Princess Blizzard.

Prophecy[edit | edit source]

The campaign was retroactively given a prophecy. It is not mentioned in any role-play.

In the sea between ice and fire, A heart of power resides. Enchanted by Frostburn's touch, It holds unknown power inside.

The IceWings and the SkyWings will fight, For ownership of the heart. Allies join the deadly fray, As war rips their world apart.

But if the heart does not find its home, It will be destroyed and lost. The future hangs in the balance, As the nations clash and toss.

Beware the Heart of Ice and Fire, A power yet unknown, If fallen into the wrong talons, No one can harness its throne.

Plot[edit | edit source]

Setup[edit | edit source]

The plot was set into motion when Queen Agave of the Kingdom of Sand discovered a submerged ravine in the gulf between the Ice Kingdom and the Sky Nation during the in-universe year 8022. It was discovered to previously been inhabited by Frostburn, an ancient SkyWing/IceWing hybrid animus and was named the Frostburn Ravine. In the cave, there was a carefully-carved artifact called the Heart of Ice and Fire, an ice sculpture in the shape of a heart with an eternally burning flame in its center. King Noctua of the Ice Kingdom and Fire Lord Vulture of the Sky Nation argued over who was entitled to the ownership of the heart and so temporarily left it in its place.

Rising tensions[edit | edit source]

Vulture established an outpost in the submerged ravine with a conduit, while Noctua set up an IceWing outpost on the coast of the gulf, and even Overlord Providence of the NightWings sent a ship to the scene.

Fire Lord Vulture hosted a dinner meeting in an attempt to sway the minds of others to his favor, but was largely unsuccessful. When the Ice Kingdom placed an outpost near the coast of the Sky Nation, Vulture asked for it to be removed before sending for it to be burned down at Noctua's refusal.

The Sky Nation officially declared the Ice Kingdom as an enemy after the SNS Paper Lantern, a SkyWing ship, was attacked by IceWings, though the whole event was actually carefully staged and remained well hidden. Forced to choose sides, nations began to form alliances. Legacy, Queen of the Rainforest Kingdom, and Moss, Ruler of the Kingdom of the Sea, chose to stand by Noctua to form the Frozen Lotus alliance. Fire Lord Vulture gathered his own allies, consisting of King Bog of the Mud Kingdom, Queen Agave of the Sand Kingdom, and Overlord Providence of the Night Kingdom. Vulture organized a ball in Oakenwatch for members of the new Firebound Alliance. It was during this event that a diamond-tipped spear, very much like the ones wielded by IceWing soldiers, was thrown at Fire Lord Vulture from an unknown source. It seemed to have been enchanted with animus magic by a note attached to the spear, but it was yet unknown that any animi currently existed.

During what was supposed to be a peaceful meeting between Fire Lord Vulture and Princess Blizzard, Blizzard attacked the Fire Lord with animus magic, revealing she was the one who attacked during the ball. Shortly after, Blizzard countered Fire Lord Vulture’s announcement with her own, claiming that Fire Lord Vulture was telling lies. The truth was finally revealed during a meeting with many members of the royalty board in Blizzard’s igloo. The attack wasn’t carried out by Blizzard. Although never proved, the attack was another setup organized by Vulture after previously gaining intelligence about Blizzard's magic. It was during this meeting (which Fire Lord Vulture could not attend) that brought forth a third, more peaceful solution to the table, suggesting that the heart could be held by a neutral party and used responsibly without bias. The plan collectively formed was to send a team of seven, each from one tribe, led by Noble Fog of the Rainforest Kingdom to investigate and safely handle the heart until something more permanent could be established. This plan ultimately failed and Fire Lord Vulture officially declared war on the Frozen Lotus Alliance.

The Full Moon Festival / Providence Disappears[edit | edit source]

It was during the war that Queen Agave hosted the first annual Full Moon Festival. In the midst of the war, representatives from each tribe, including their rulers, traveled to Euphrates for a peaceful gathering. The gathering was prematurely interrupted when a shard of crystal suddenly erupted from the floor, piercing Agave in the center of the room. Alive, but critically wounded, the festival met an abrupt end with Heir Obelisk taking the responsibilities of rulership until Agave could recover.

Shortly after the events at the Full Moon Festival, Overlord Providence disappeared without a trace, leaving only a vague letter of resignation. Rapture took his place as king to continue the NightWing presence in the war.

After the war, the Kingdom of Sand would keep its borders closed and palace sealed until King Rapture was able to reach into Agave's mind and wake her from her coma.

Showdown at Melanie's Evergreens[edit | edit source]

During the night, the Firebound Alliance launched a surprise attack with the majority of their forces on the IceWing village of Melanie's Evergreens, characterized by its seemingly impossible arch of snow. In a direct confrontation between Noctua and Vulture on the arch above on the battlefield, Vulture managed to severely injure Noctua before sending him into the fray below, despite attempts by Blizzard to help. Legacy and Moss dived onto the battlefield to keep their alliance leader alive, leaving Blizzard alone with the Fire Lord. King Rapture arrived and, conflicted in the situation, tried to convince Vulture to stop. In what would be Blizzard’s final confrontation with the Fire Lord, unable to nearly match his combat, she summoned the Heart of Ice and Fire above her and instantly shattered the heart. Vulture was quick to launch himself at Blizzard before Rapture intervened, swinging at Vulture and knocking the metal skull off his head. Vulture fell to the snow, unconscious. The war was cut to a stop after the confrontation.

After the War[edit | edit source]

Both Vulture and Noctua survived the confrontation, but had retreated and gone silent, leaving the rest of Pyrrhia to their own. Blizzard considered the Sky Nation no longer enemies and officially a neutral nation. The Sand Kingdom closed off to visitors and refugees, locking down the entirety of Euphrates. Obelisk as well as Humble broke off from the Firebound Alliance, becoming neutral to all other tribes.

Battle at Rainforest's Edge[edit | edit source]

Not long after the final battle, Queen Legacy began to push the RainWing territory past the treeline into the territory of the Mud Kingdom. Upon being notified by King Bog, Fire Lord Vulture jumped immediately at the notice, at this point well recovered. Against the MudWing and SkyWing forces, the RainWings were in a losing battle until Queen Legacy unleashed a blast of fire toward Vulture, in turn, setting the border ablaze. In the chaos of the quickly spreading fire, both sides retreated from the edge. In an official statement from Legacy, she revealed that she was a half-SkyWing hybrid. The damage caused by her own fire severely destroyed her throat and lungs, and she deemed herself unfit to rule, leaving in secrecy to an unknown location. Queen Raina was been left to lead the rainforest, both she and Fog sustaining permanent injuries from the battle.

Shortly after, Noctua passed the crown to Crystalline Empress Blizzard due to his severe injuries.
